WHAT IS MUAY THAI KICKBOXING?
Also known as the "art of eight limbs", Muay Thai is a striking martial art that utilizes kicks, punches, elbows, and knees. Unlike traditional kickboxing, it also uses the clinch for greater control of the opponent. The roots of Muay Thai can be traced back to 16th century Thai warrior hand-to-hand combat training; it's since evolved into the modern sport we see today. It remains an excellent discipline for anyone seeking to learn self-defense, train MMA, or just improve general fitness levels.
WHAT GEAR DO I NEED TO BRING TO CLASS?
Students are required to bring their own gear. The gear list is as follows:
• a mouthguard
• headgear
• handwraps
• 14-16oz gloves. These heavier weight gloves offer greater cushion and protection in sparring practice.
• shin guards
Kids' classes do not include sparring, but safety is still paramount. Youth students need only bring:
• a mouthguard
• handwraps
• gloves (8-10oz; opt for heavier gloves for older children)
• shin guards
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL CLASS LOOK LIKE?
Classes typically begin with cardio warmups to get the blood flowing, limber up the body, and work on aerobic conditioning. After this, Coach Fahd will run through technique drills, making sure your form is correct along the way. In the adult class, the technique portion is followed by sparring (please let Coach Fahd and your training partners know of any injuries or conditions -- safety and health are the top priorities). Kids' classes do not include sparring, as the focus at this age is safely building a technical foundation of the sport. A cooldown stretch session, or sometimes core work, rounds out each practice.
